Metabolism, I want to be Friends Again (Let me Bribe you with a Recipe)

Warning: Lame post coming up. Read at your own risk.

Metabolism, are you there? It’s me, LeeQs. Remember the good old junior high, high school, and university days? You had my back every time. Didn’t matter what I shoved into my mouth, you were there. Be it the whole bag of Cheetos I had for lunch, the cans and cans of soft drinks I used to wash down said bag of Cheetos with, the chocolate bars I had after badminton, volleyball, or basketball practice. Whatever processed food caught my eye that day, YOU were there.

In junior high, people would stare in amazement as this short little 4 foot 9  Asian girl wolfed down a foot long Subway. Now I’m a whopping 5 feet. Yes, what a growth spurt I had. Which reminds me, how come you never showed up at my doorstep Ms. Growth Spurt? I waited and waited and waited, but I’ll get back to you after I’m done dealing with sellout Metabolism here. Anyways, those were the days weren’t they old friend?

Then one day I had a child and you seemed to disappear. You allowed me to maintain the same weight from junior high all the way through to my early motherhood years. After that, it seemed like a part of me was missing. I even tried to start eating better in hopes that you’d come back, but no matter how hard I tried, you still refused. You know I’ve never been one to worry about weight, but your absence is really starting to make me want to step on that evil scale more often these days. I want you to know that just because I have kids now, doesn’t mean we can’t be friends anymore. My door will always be open to you. Just between you and I though, there IS someone who I really don’t want to be friends with anymore, Insomnia. Gosh, she can be such a pain, but shhh…..don’t tell her I said that. I miss you my dear Metabolism, please come back soon.

The moral of this: Exercise and eat right, your metabolism will love you for it (so will your body).

If you’ve gotten this far, pat yourself on the back my friend. Let’s at least try to end this properly, with a recipe. Yeah, now I’m talking right?

Ketchup Shrimp (on top of Enoki Mushrooms)

Note: The chilies on the side are just part of my plate design. You can definitely add sliced chilies to this dish if you’d like. I highly recommend it, but I didn’t because of my kiddies.

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb shrimp deveined (shell on or off is up to you)
  • 2 tbsp cooking oil
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 3 cloves garlic chopped
  • 2 stalks green onions cut into thirds
  • ketchup
  • salt to taste

I don’t know how much ketchup I used, about a big glop like this:

Instructions:

Heat up cooking oil in a hot pan or wok. Add in green onions and garlic. Cook until garlic starts to turn golden brown. Push green onions to the side. Add shrimp and sesame oil. Cook until shrimp have turned pink and start to curl. Add in ketchup, mix everything together and cook for another minute. Add salt to taste, give it a final mix and plate.

My Grandma used to make this and ketchup mussels for me when I was younger. I still love those dishes to this day. I added Enoki mushrooms because they were on sale at my grocery store ($1/pack), and I’m cheap like that 😀 .

I hope you all have a lovely week. Until next time, friends and family. Do you have a favorite or memorable childhood dish?

Hahaha! Lequan, u’re so funny! Great post! As u may already know, I’m a prawn lover too, so this is definitely my kinda dish 🙂

  2. 2 denise @ bread expectations March 8, 2011 at 2:46 am

Oh LeQuan!!! *sigh* We are so on the same page this week! I fear I may never see my former BFF – manic metabolism again 😦 I seem to have deeply offended her as she no longer gives me the time of day. Those were the days, sweet, sweet, brimming with fat and sugar, skinny days.

Love your post, love the dish, though you know I would add those chillies! We like so many of the same things. And this would have me laughing, if it wasn’t my wedding anniversary this Thursday, and I could fit into the dress I bought two months ago, that’s suddenly SHRUNK

    *waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhaaahaahaaaaaaaaa*

    • 3 LeQuan March 8, 2011 at 3:19 pm

Denise! Your wedding anniversary this Thursday?! Congrats congrats sweetie! I’m sure you’ll look beautiful in your dress. Metabolisms sure get offended easily don’t they? The worse part is, I don’t even know what I ate to offend it. Sigh. Always a pleasure to joke around with you :-D.

  3. 4 serena March 8, 2011 at 2:52 am

yay! ketchup prawns made it to the blog 🙂
tough question on the favorite childhood dish. i loved everything my mom made.

  4. 5 Quay Po Cooks March 8, 2011 at 3:22 am

LeQuan, you wolfed down a foot long sausage during your junior high? Why am I not surprise? Cos I could eat 3 bowls of curry laksa and 4 bowls of red beans soup at one go back then. No, I am not kidding. I can’t remember what was my weight but I had double chin, does that give you a rough idea how cuddly I was? So Mr. Metabolism has never been my friend. On the other hand, Miss Insomnia is a tenacious guest and I agree with you, she is a pain in the neck. Since Mr. Metabolism has never been my friend and I don’t think he will ever be, I will just eat what I love and don’t even think of him anymore. Ketchup Shrimp here I come!! Love your post and love the dish!

    • 6 LeQuan March 8, 2011 at 3:23 pm

Lol Veronica! A foot long Subway submarine, not a foot long sausage. Although the sausage would probably have been easier and quicker to wolf down. Ha! That’s my kinda gal, eat what you want because you like it. More power to you, my friend!

  5. 7 5 Star Foodie March 8, 2011 at 6:27 am

I totally hear you about metabolism, it was a struggle for me even when I was young, though recently it seems to be working a lot better which makes me very happy 🙂 The shrimp look terrific over enoki mushrooms, very yummy!

  6. 8 Sharon March 8, 2011 at 8:32 am

I don’t have super metabolism, so I’ve always been one to watch what I eat. What am I saying, I eat all I want lol. But I do have to make sure I get some exercise or I can start feeling my jeans are getting tighter and tummy getting podgier haha. And yes, scales are evil! Though unlike you I tend to avoid them altogether. What I don’t know won’t hurt me, ignorance is bliss haha. I had to laugh when I read “I’m now a whopping 5 feet” lol. So funny.

These shrimps look so good! When I saw the photo I was thinking it’s probably quite a complicated dish, but not at all! And the fact you used ketchup is the best part :D. I love ketchup. I go to McDonald’s and always get so many packets that the staff know me now lol. Enoki mushrooms are SO good too!

I have so many favourite childhood I could go on about it all day haha. My mom always teases me about how when I was a kid, the other kids would run and play first while I wanted to sit and eat first lol. Chicken skin was one of my favourites, especially at KFC. Sounds gross I know haha. I would’ve peeled off the chicken skin of everyone’s meal if mom didn’t stop me. That’s probably the most memorable one…meals with chicken was always a big hooha because I wasn’t allowed all the chicken skin I wanted lol.

    • 9 LeQuan March 8, 2011 at 3:41 pm

So that’s where my metabolism went, give it back! Although I don’t blame her for many reasons too long to list here ;-). Scales are evil. I was never one to use them though. Only got one when I got preggos. And um…I didn’t see any podge in that dress you were wearing. You wanna see podgie? I’ll show you podgie.

The shrimpies are super easy to make. Although I think Mary might use super jumbo sized prawns. Lol. I think you’d like these. And KFC chicken skin rocks! I used to be a chicken skin stealer too. I swear, we must’ve been sisters in our past lives or something. I admire a girl who can eat whatever she wants and still look as good as you do. Talk the talk and walk the walk (with heels). You go gurl!

      • 10 Sharon March 9, 2011 at 1:55 am

Lol! Oh trust me I have them too, I just hide them well haha.

Likewise LeQuan, likewise! How do you have two kids and still look that good! I always ask that when I see people who still have such a good figure after having kids and one lady told me “Well, you get bigger when you’re pregnant, then when they’re out your tummy shrinks back”. She said it in such a ‘duh’ tone like I was asking something silly lol. I was thinking, that sounds wayyy too easy haha.

  7. 11 Roxan March 8, 2011 at 8:45 am

Oh, Lequan, I totally know what you mean. I wish I had my metabolism back too! I just don’t get it. I have a bunch of friends that are the same age as me but their metabolisms haven’t slowed down one but. No fair!!!

  8. 12 Jos March 8, 2011 at 9:52 am

Haha cute post. I love your shrimp dish recipe..and enoki mushroom is my top favorite – or I should say I love all kinds of mushrooms! Thanks for sharing this 😀

I love your “chili plate”! It adds more for food photography

  9. 13 Leah @ Why Deprive? March 8, 2011 at 12:09 pm

    lol – love it! 🙂
My metabolism and I only just started to get along. We werent always friends.

That shrimp sounds amazing! I’ll have to try it.

  10. 14 Ameena March 8, 2011 at 3:10 pm

I miss my metabolism so much! I want it to come back too but alas, I think it’s gone for good. Gone are the days I used to eat a giant bowl of french fries followed by a giant bowl of ice cream sprinkled with Nestle Quik. Gross, right? No! It was amazing, I swear.

I love love love shrimp and ketchup too! So of course I am going to love this recipe. 🙂

  11. 16 Pachecopatty March 8, 2011 at 3:32 pm

I’m not sure if Mr. Metabolism was ever my friend, to be honest.
I always wanted to eat way more than normal(?)and Mr.Metabolism frowns on that kind of behavior and gives you a time out by letting you gain weight around your middle,he’s a sourpuss anyway.
Now, I do Pilates 3 times a week and try to walk and hike when I can, weather permitting.
All I can say is thank goodness I’m active and I know you have to be with small children at home.
I love to eat but my appetite is not as great as when I was younger although I just ate lunch and your shrimp is making me hungry again!

  12. 17 Nancy/SpicieFoodie March 8, 2011 at 6:28 pm

I would love to have the metabolism I had in junior high school. I can’t complain too much though. You are so right about proper diet and exercise, it is the key. Your bribe is one I’ll take, it looks mouthwatering.

  13. 18 torviewtoronto March 8, 2011 at 7:22 pm

this looks wonderful and delicious shrimp

  14. 19 sophia March 8, 2011 at 8:14 pm

Well, that’s reason #98 why I don’t wanna have kids…but hey, your kids totally owe you now. You sacrificed your youthful metabolism for their births! They need to kowtow to you!

  15. 20 Anna Johnston March 8, 2011 at 9:02 pm

Insomnia & slow metabolism…, they are great friends aren’t they. And the thing is just any old exercise doesn’t seem to cut it for that stupid Mr Metabolism., he wants the puff pant swet breaking out all over you type exercise…. apparently running around at work isn’t enough either.
Love this recipe too…. in fact anything with shrimp is my friend., so I was ‘in’ at first glance with this one.

  16. 21 anncoo March 9, 2011 at 2:48 am

hahaa…LeQuan I love this post! In fact I read twice and really makes me smile 🙂 Really love this dish with the big prawns on top! So nice …yum..yum..

  17. 22 Light Delight with Tou Tou March 9, 2011 at 6:47 am

Hey LeQuan! The metabolism is important however I feel the same way as you!! But I read that the only way to keep it at high level is to pump your heart about 70-80% of highest level for 3 times a week. As it gets warmer, we can finally start to seriously work out! haha

The shrimp looks very yummy 🙂 You did bribe all your readers, haha

  18. 23 Biren @ Roti n Rice March 9, 2011 at 9:42 am

Yes, I would like to have my jr high metabolism back too. These days I try to skip lunch and I am still getting into trouble. The key is of course excersise which means I need to move my butt off this chair. Your ketchup shrimp looks delicious! The chilies with it please.

  19. 24 peteformation March 9, 2011 at 10:01 am

ha ha ha, real funny post. I want my metabolism back too…..LOL!

  20. 25 Cooking Gallery March 9, 2011 at 1:39 pm

My mum used to make a very similar dish and my sister especially was crazy about it. Gorgeous colour, LeQuan!

  21. 26 Stella March 9, 2011 at 1:51 pm

My LeQuanis! I’ve been thinking a lot about metabolism and weight lately. I recently gained my first 5 lbs, though I think it’s gone now again. Either way, it was weird to pick up weight and not really know why it happened. I think metabolism just slows a bit after childbirth and also in the early thirties, so a double whammy might have happened to you in recent years (smile). You always look very thin in your photos to me. Though I do remember my awesome teenage body. I think that’s something we’ll all just have to long for in this life…:)
You know, (and I’m only saying this b/c of this post) a healthful vegan diet will drop weight like you wouldn’t believe and without hunger, b/c you can eat as much beans, whole grains, fruits, vegetables and nuts as you want sans the meat, dairy and any vegan junk food (potato chips, oreos, etc). I know you might not be ready for such a thing, but it’s good to have this info in your arsenal in case you ever do get desperate or just want to try it. Yeah…
Oh! And I’ve never heard of ketchup shrimp, LeQuanis-sounds like it would be so sweet and spicy. Yummerz!

    • 27 LeQuan March 10, 2011 at 2:42 pm

Always a pleasure to read your comments my witchy friend. Dang! If this is what a double whammy feels like, I sure as heck am not looking forward to the third whammy ;-). I can definitely do a vegan diet. I don’t think hubby and kiddies would be able to do it though, so to make things easier for myself I just don’t. Thanks for the compliment as well Stella, I guess I just hide my pudge well :-D. Hope things are going well with you.

  22. 28 tigerfish March 9, 2011 at 4:58 pm

Hey, I can wolf down a foot-long sub too and I am not “big-sized” (I think) in US standards….lol

  23. 29 Min {Honest Vanilla} March 9, 2011 at 10:58 pm

Very funny post! I totally agree with parting ways with Metabolism when age catches up! Yummy prawns nonetheless, metabolism or not 😉

  24. 30 Magic of Spice March 10, 2011 at 10:29 am

LeQuan, you are just too funny…but sadly I think most of us have had a parting of the ways with our dear metabolism 😦 Your shrimp dish looks great, and I agree a good diet and exercise is key. Now all I have to do is try and follow that logic, lol

  25. 31 Lawyer Loves Lunch March 10, 2011 at 11:07 am

I just read about a famous chef’s ketchup chicken recipe (I think it was a Suvir Saran recipe). That means you could be famous for your ketchup shrimp, LeeQs 🙂

PS: I think you look great!

  26. 32 Tanantha @ I Just Love My Apron March 10, 2011 at 2:06 pm

LOL this post makes me laugh so hard! Seems like everyone wants Mr.Matabolism back! I eat more than my husband and my friends are jealous of my metabolism. As getting old and hitting 30s, i started to feel the difference! sigh..can’t imagine after I have my own kid.

  27. 33 Jessie March 10, 2011 at 2:59 pm

Aww, hehe 🙂 I feel your pain – I really do! Ok, we haven’t had our kiddies yet, but that’s not far away! The funny thing is, as an (almost) RD, I know all the techniques to rev up metabolism, and yet, things are not the same as in high school when I could eat slices of pizza or plate and plates of pasta. I hit 21, and it was like a switch was flipped. Sad! Oh well, at least I’m nourishing my body with good food, even if I can’t eat as much of it! I’m a little nervous for when we have kids, though, because putting on a lot of weight afterward sees to be genetic in my family. Ah, well, those kids will be worth it … I hope … 😉 At least K and L must be – they’re so stinkin’ cute! In any case, I think you look like a hot mama in your pics, especially with you and Gary posing for the camera – cutest couple evah! 😀

Ketchup and shrimp?? I’m there! Peter is a ketchup man, so this will definitely have to enter our rotation. Maybe I can even convince my brother in law to eat shrimp if I make this dish! 🙂 Take care, LeeeeeeeQola!!!!!

    • 34 LeQuan March 10, 2011 at 11:21 pm

Um…techniques to rev up metabolism? Girl you’ve been holding out on me. Haha. That’s it, I must stalk you more. And did hot Jessie just call me a hot mama? Well how flattered am I? Thanks for the compliment dear. I try, I try VERY HARD! Lol. “Those kids will be worth it” very well said wiener. You’re going to be a great mom one day. You’ve already got the knowledge and information you need to feed your kiddies right. Not to mention, a heart of gold.

If you do try the recipe, let me know how you like it. This works well with mussels also. Loving the LeeeeQola! Lol! Have a great weekend, Wiener!

wow this food looks amazing… and im totally interested in all you can eat lobster¬

  29. 36 Devaki @ weavethousandflavors March 11, 2011 at 11:46 am

This is too funy Le Quan – especially as I am sitting on a freight train approaching the big ‘0’ – you guess right :0 my metabolism, what is left of it is going to come to a grinding halt – I fear…that’s if it is functioning at all!!!

I get this…soooo get this…either way, your prawns are getting made very very soon….wish we were neighbours…sigh..

    chow! Devaki @ weavethousandflavors

  30. 37 Kelsey @ Snacking Squirrel March 11, 2011 at 7:34 pm

hahaha i can totally picture you with a subway sandwich possibly larger than you while everyone around stared is astonishment! too bad there isnt a way we could bottle and keep our own metabolisms forever!

mmm ive been thinking a lot lately about childhood foods and more specifically things like grilled cheese sandwiches, chicken nuggets, pizza pops, sloppy joes, spaghetti and chili, scalloped potatoes and meat loaf… things we always ate lots of.

    xoxo ❤

  31. 39 Monet March 11, 2011 at 10:39 pm

You are so cute. My metabolism is out of control…I’m actually having to work super hard to GAIN weight. I know this won’t last forever though! Thank you for sharing your witty words and this delicious meal. I hope you have a beautiful weekend. Thanks for getting mine off to a tasty start!

  32. 40 A Canadian Foodie March 12, 2011 at 2:39 pm

Don’t even start with metabolism. Holy cow. I could write a book. The dish does look fantastic and I think the idea is very sweet. grandma’s are the best.
My favourite childhood recipe – and still a family favourite is my mom’s meatloaf. I have to post it for you.
See you tomorrow – looking forward to it – but – please don’t be upset Miss OCD. I didn’t realize we would be turning our clocks back… and I have not been sleeping well. Can we stop an hour later?
I haven’t posted for 3 weeks – deep in the throws of planning Eat ALberta. Great work. Time well spent, but missing my hobby site, my kitchen, cooking and reading your wonderful posts!
I hope to catch up soon! (Did you get my message about it?)
    🙂

lol I know what you mean!

  35. 43 Lazaro March 19, 2011 at 3:34 pm

Lovely shrimp dish. Great use of ketchup, such an undervalued kitchen accoutrement. Big fan of enoki mushrooms too. I remember you used them in the dish when you guested on LC.

    Metabolism = diet + exercise…sadly.

    Peace.

  36. 44 kjanzen March 20, 2011 at 2:34 pm

you are a funny one!!! metabolism left me years before children…and now that our first is on it’s way, i’m downright scared! just have to get back on that exercise wagon. sigh!

    great recipe, as always!

  37. 45 Kimba's Kitchen March 20, 2011 at 10:09 pm

LOL!! This is the cutest post ever! I love it, not lame at all. And so true! Every word of it, I can so totally relate i’ve been trying to increase my metabolism but it’s easier said than done! Thanks for the encouragement, hehe. And nice to meet you via Quay Po! 😉

  38. 46 MaryMoh March 25, 2011 at 2:07 am

Haha…love how you talk about metabolism and how much you ate in your younger days 😀 Yes, exercise is very important to keep our metabolism up. But well, taking care of little ones is good exercise itself…running, cleaning, cooking and chasing them around! Phew…glad my time is over….only a different time of chasing…to get ready in time!!!

Hope you are sleeping well. All moms need enough sleep. Sharon woke me up every 2 hours when she was a baby! Can you believe that? All because she wanted milk! I was so exhausted. No wonder she still loves to eat frequently. You know what puts me to sleep? Cookbooks…haha

Love the prawn dish. You know I like it. I will finish that whole plate….mmmm….. maybe not enough 😛

    • 47 LeQuan March 25, 2011 at 12:47 pm

You’re so right Mary, running, cleaning, and chasing my little ones takes up so much energy. Hubby and I always joke how I was the pregnant one, but it seems as though he gained all the weight. I’m back to my normal weight and he still has pregnancy weight to lose. Haha.

You know what? I’m not the least bit surprised about Sharon. Lol. Now you should ask her to cook for you every two hours :-D. Oh God I hope she doesn’t read this or I won’t hear the end of it. Lol. Cookbooks make me too hungry to sleep. I have a love-hate relationship with them. Hope you have a wonderful weekend, Mary!
