What The Heck is a Taste Tripping Party?

I hope everyone had a great Canada day and happy 4th of July! I’m a little late on this post as the family and I visited Banff, Lake Louise, and Calgary this past holiday weekend. That’s a whole other post in itself though.

So just this past Wednesday I was invited to a taste tripping/potluck party/blogger meet up hosted by Valerie @ A Canadian Foodie. Counting the dishes that I took pictures of, I’d say there were about 17 foodies and bloggers plus their other halves; so about 30 people in attendance.

As soon as we arrived, we were each given name tags with the names of our blogs underneath our names, then escorted to the drinks section. Check out this beautiful, huge punch bowl. How can you tell “someone” entertains a lot ? πŸ˜‰

You can click on any of the smaller pictures to enlarge them.

Not only did we have name tags, but Valerie also made labels for each dish.

Plus, she put together a recipe book of all the dishes that everyone brought that night and we all got to take one home. How cool is that?

Look at all this wonderful food.

The table was so long that I had to take two pictures just to capture everything. But it’s also cause my picture taking skills suck.

The moment I’ve been waiting for all night, Valerie announcing that dinner is about to start…teehee.

Let’s start with the salads shall we?

Courtney, from Take it and Like it!, brought a Tzitziki & Pita, Garden Salad.

Kelley, from Cookbook Cooks, brought a Summer Chickpea Salad.

Jean, from May Contain Nuts, brought a Moroccan Quinoa Salad.

Mel, from Cellar Door, brought a Tabbouleh Salad.

King Crabby, who is also from May Contain Nuts, brought a Pickled Beet Salad.

Brooke, also from Take it and Like it!, brought Prosciutto & Fig Crostini.

FIG! Can you believe I’ve never had a fig before? Lynn, if you’re reading this, I FINALLY GOT TO TASTE A FIG! Okay, so it wasn’t a whole fig, just a slice of a fig, but you were right…YUMMERS! And so continues mission fig. Brooke, I’ll be stalking dropping by your blog soon to find out where you got those figs. Or if anyone knows where I can find fresh figs in Edmonton and would like to save Brooke from me stalking her blog, please shoot me an email or comment.

Sorry, got a bit sidetracked; that happens a lot with me (hubby is nodding his head in agreement). Back to the food shall we?

Lea, from XOX Lea Lea, brought Brochettes de Kefta.

Allan, from Button Soup brought a Goose Confit Ravioli with Celery Leaves and a Rhubarb Vinaigrette.

Kevin, from Kevin Kossowan, brought an Applewood Smoked Moose Tongue.

Bianca, from What’s For Dinner?, brought a warm Pesto Potato Salad.

Valerie, our gracious hostess, made Roasted Red Peppers. Not to mention, that huge bowl of punch you saw earlier, the taste tripping spread (which you’ll see later), and not one, but two huge Pavlovas (which you’ll also see later).

Maria, manager of the City Market, brought Sloppy Joe Bison Sliders.

Daniel (@DanPrime) brought Portuguese-Style Chicken and Rice.

Colleen, from How to Cook a Wolf, brought Chicken Tajine with Tomatoes Olives and Chickpeas as well as some homemade flat bread.

Chris, from Eating is the Hard Part, brought Puerco Pibil (also Cochinita Pibil). Hey Valerie, I hope you don’t mind me stealing this picture from you. By the time I got to this dish, everything was all gone (I can definitely see why).

Ms. BrΓ»lΓ©e from The Brulee Blog brought a Pandan Agar Agar dessert, but I forgot to get a picture of it as she was passing it out around the room and I was too busy enjoying it. But you can get the recipe and see a picture of it by clicking on the Pandan Agar Agar link above.

Finally, I brought Fermented Tofu Sauce with Water Spinach. Or for those of you who understand Chinese, it’s also known as Fuyu Ong Choy.

I’m sorry if I’ve missed anybody’s dish, or if I made any mistakes on your dishes; please let me know and I’ll be glad to make the correction. So let the party begin!

Here’s my plate. Being the piggy that I am, I tried to stuff a little of everything on it. I was unsuccessful as I had to go back for a second plate to get everything I missed the first time. Let’s just say, Edmonton foodies/bloggers, you sure know how to work that kitchen! Everything was fantastic! A lot of these dishes were new to me but I enjoyed each and every one of them. They all had their own unique tastes. Now this is what a potluck is supposed to be like.

The next part of the party was quite an experience.

Ever heard of the miracle fruit or miracle berry? Well we tried the miracle berry tablets. You’re supposed to take one tablet, let it dissolve on your tongue without chewing or swallowing it, and smear it around your tongue as it’s dissolving. The tablet alters the sour and bitter taste buds on the tongue, causing sour foods to taste sweet.

Valerie is explaining what to do with the tablet as many of us had never tried this before.

As if there wasn’t enough food at the potluck, Valerie put out this beautiful spread just for the taste tripping.

She laid out grapefruits, limes, lemons, radishes, rhubarb, oranges, pineapples, tomatoes, olives, pickles, garlic, grapes, kiwi, brussels sprouts, strawberries, chocolate, salt and vinegar chips, cheese, sour cream, yoghurt, different sauces, and different beers.

Here’s my plate of samples.

The ones that surprised me most were the lime and lemon slices. Both of them tasted sweet, like lemonade. I liked them both so much that I took both slices from the hubby’s plate as well. The funny thing was, while the lime and lemon slices tasted sweet inside my mouth, the outside rim of my mouth and lips were burning from the sourness. I also enjoyed the strawberry, kiwi, and rhubarb, as they all had heightened sweetness to them.

We weren’t done just yet as Valerie brought out the final dessert for the night, Pavlova. This was the first time I had ever had Pavlova, and it knocked the socks off of me. Look at this beauty!

She not only made one, but two Pavlovas!

And look at the size of them!

They definitely tasted as delicious as they looked! I can’t wait till she posts the recipe.

What a wonderful taste tripping/potluck party/blogger meet up this was Valerie. As I’ve commented on your blog, you bring such life to the blogosphere, and I love your constant curiosity of the unknown. It was a pleasure to finally meet Vanja. Thank you muchly for the invite as this was the best potluck I have ever been to. What an experience!

To all the bloggers whom I got a chance to talk to that night, it was a pleasure meeting you all as well. It’s so nice to finally put faces to the blogs I stalk…err…I mean, read. I’m ashamed to say I haven’t had a chance to visit all of your blogs yet, but I’ll definitely be making my way around to everyone’s blogs soon.

I hope you all enjoyed reading this as much as I’ve enjoyed writing it. If you want a much better explanation of the taste tripping, and better pictures, you can also check out Valerie’s post here. Food blogging totally rocks! Until next time friends and family.

Oh my gosh…..so much food and fun!! I wish I can move to your place! Everything looks so mouth-watering. I think I will dream of them tonight! If I were there, I will eat 1 week’s food in one day…haha. You are very lucky. I hope you have more of such meet-ups and share with us.

  2. 3 A Canadian Foodie July 5, 2010 at 8:42 am

    LeQuan!
I never saw you taking any photos – and there are so many! I am happy to see some of them as the ones I took of the large group didn’t turn out. One regret I had was not taking a group photo at one point. That would have been BRILLIANT!
Of course I don’t mind you “borrowing” a photo of mine, and I borrowed a couple of yours just now as I forgot to photograph my own dish – and now I can add it to the post. XO
And, to everyone else (and you): You may remember Lequan mentioning taking me to Chinatown for a tour. If not, she spent an entire day touring me and educating me about Chinatown… and it was AM-A-ZING! When she arrived at the party, she handed me a bag of “sweets” that I immediately put into the fridge. The only thing I didn’t buy on the tour with LeQuan were the Asian sweets. The bag she gave me was filled with them!! I photographed and tasted each, and that was my breakfast “the day after the party”! I have not thanked LeQuan yet for this thoughtful and lovely gift! I hope to write about it, but, the red bean banana was my favourite. The rice ones were just to hard to enjoy. The pandan with coconut was tasty and I was NUTS over the coconut sauce. Do you have a recipe? The pandan that Sherene made was just lovely -and this one was quite a bit more “rubbery”…. but YUMMMY. You are a true sweetheart and I am so happy to hear you had a blast!
    XO

You didn’t see me taking photos cause I’m just that good. Lol, just kidding. It’s most likely cause I have a cheap camera that I can hide nicely in my pocket. Teehee. I think I was the only one with a point and shoot there…waaah. Haha.

I think we were ALL too busy enjoying the party to even think about a group photo, but yes, that would’ve been a great idea.

Honestly, I don’t even remember what I bought. I just grabbed one of every dessert they had. I really wanted to get you the green layered one but I went to 3 stores and they were all sold out by the time I got there. I was so disappointed. But I think Ms. Brulee’s dessert tastes a lot better than those layered ones. And I’m sure the coconut sauce is just coconut milk dilluted somehow with some sugar added. Hope you enjoyed the desserts. Thank you to both you and Vanja again for such a great experience. Bun Rue at my house soon. I’ll let you know when. Huge hug!

  3. 5 The Hungry Hubby July 5, 2010 at 8:44 am

It was lots of fun, great food and great company. Thank you Valerie.

  4. 7 bruleeblog July 5, 2010 at 9:58 am

LeQuan, it was great to meet you! I’ve found fresh figs at the Italian Centre shop before… and once in a blue moon Superstore will get a shipment in for a week or two and I buy up full trays of it.

Valerie, the store pandan is more rubbery because I purposely reduced the amount of agar agar in mine and increased the coconut milk to make it more creamy and soft.

    • 8 luvtoeat July 5, 2010 at 11:13 am

It was great to finally meet you as well Ms. BrΓ»lΓ©e. By the way, do you prefer Ms. Brulee or your real name? Thank you for letting me know where to find fresh figs πŸ˜€ You just made my day! I’m definitely going to make that delicious dessert πŸ˜›

  5. 10 Ameena July 5, 2010 at 11:10 am

This is such a great idea! I wish we had something like this in Los Angeles as it would be great to meet other bloggers through their cooking.

I can’t believe how much delicious food you guys had! Valerie certainly knows how to put a party on and did a great job with presentation too. The Pavlovas look fantastic.

Glad you had such a good time…and I totally get off track too LeQuan! Hazards of being a mother and not being able to form a complete thought. Ever.

    • 11 luvtoeat July 5, 2010 at 11:28 am

Oh Ameena, your comments always make me feel so much better. I’m glad there’s someone else out there who understands the hustle and bustle, crazy life of a mom. I swear, our minds are constantly thinking of 10 different things at the same time. Seriously, if I’m ever in LA, I’m calling you up so we can both unleash all our mommy complaining on each other. Lol. Hope you had a happy 4th of July my friend!

  6. 12 Lea July 5, 2010 at 11:16 am

It was great to meet you! Forgot to mention it to you in person, but I loved your fermented tofu with water spinach. Spinach is pretty much my favourite vegetable and on top of that, and the taste kinda reminded me of home, haha. πŸ™‚

Haha, I too was a little piggy! My husband was looking at how I was trying to squeeze every dish into my large plate and wryly pointing out I can come back for the rest, anyway. πŸ˜› Psh.

    • 13 lequan@luvtoeat July 5, 2010 at 7:43 pm

      Hey Lea!

It was great to meet you too! I really liked your dish, and that’s saying a lot cause I’m actually not much of a meat eater. Wish we could’ve chatted more though. By the way, loved your pics on Valerie’s post – too cute!

  7. 14 Cindy July 5, 2010 at 2:22 pm

Thanks for my birthday wishes!!! There is so much amazing food in this post that it is almost cruel. Do doubt, worth a plane ticket. πŸ˜‰ Never heard of the Miracle Berry. Very interesting. Much fun.

  8. 15 aletheiazoe July 5, 2010 at 8:27 pm

    LEEQ’S!!!!!!!!!!1

I feel like I should totally copy my comment from Val’s blog and paste it here. It’s not like I didn’t talk about you and your delicious and classic ong choy stir-fry anyway. πŸ˜›

I’m pretty sure I would love taste-tripping. I would love to eat certain disgusting foods and think that they taste amazing! Imagine how healthy I could be! πŸ˜€ Berry tablets for my children, for sure, if they turn out to be less veggie-loving than their mother. Ha! I’LL MAKE THEM EAT KALE.

YOU’VE NEVER HAD A FIG BEFORE?!?!?!?!

I’m sorry but FIGS ARE THE BEST FRUITS IN THE WHOLE WORLD. With a close tie to persimmon aka the sharon fruit. Hopefully they were ripe and sweet though. Sometimes they’re dry and…not as pleasant. That wouldn’t give a very good impression for someone eating them for the first time in their life.

Sooooo…if I ever come to Edmonton, Val, you and I are going taste-tripping. And other forms of tripping. Oui?

    πŸ™‚ Aletheia

    • 16 luvtoeat July 6, 2010 at 11:12 am

Yes…I mean no, I’ve never had a fig before 😦 I know, I know, deprived. But I am proud to say I’ve had persimmons πŸ˜€ I only like the crunchy ones though. Persimmon snob right here.

Hmmm…now you’ve got me wondering what meat would taste like with the miracle berry.

I can’t speak for Valerie but oui, if you ever come to Edmonton I’d be glad to do the taste tripping with you πŸ˜€

  9. 17 Leah @ Why Deprive? July 5, 2010 at 9:39 pm

Wow – all that food looks amazing! I was making mental notes of what looked good so I could comment about it, but the list started getting really long. Basically, it all looks fantastic! πŸ™‚ Sounds like so much fun!!

  10. 18 serena July 6, 2010 at 2:10 am

I’ve heard of Taste Tripping Parties, on CSI: NY. A lot of what I know, I’ve learned from TV. haha.

  11. 19 Cindy @ This Adventure, Our Life July 6, 2010 at 11:53 am

This looks absolutely amazing and fun! I love all the different dishes pictured! Those tablets, wow, so interesting…I will have to check those out! What great fun to be all together!!

  12. 20 Stella July 6, 2010 at 3:41 pm

Hey LeQuan, I saw you at this party on Valerie’s site. I was like ‘there’s my LeQuan’! So cute…
I hope you guys all had fun. You know, I’ve seen that miracle fruit on that one culinary show. I can’t remember the chefs name that is so into that fruit (Omar maybe). He thinks it’s the answer to feeding the world by making not so delicious, but healthful foods taste better…?
p.s. If I lived in Canada and went to this party, I would have gotten toasted and embarrassed myself (tee hee)!

  13. 22 Lazaro July 6, 2010 at 7:14 pm

    LeQuan,

What a great post of a truly unique event. To meet some fellow bloggers and share some food…awesome!

    Fantastic photos of great food!

    Be well

  14. 23 Juliana July 6, 2010 at 8:47 pm

Wow…what a fun event…the food look so yummie and I sure enjoyed the pictures πŸ™‚

  15. 24 denise @ quickies on the dinner table July 6, 2010 at 10:54 pm

LeQuan – you’re quite the mover and shaker, aren’t you?!?! LOL

Fantastic post – thanks for sharing all the details and taking so many photos to share with us! That punch bowl is beautiful and I have heard of this weird taste altering berry but have never tried it. Of all the things in the spread, you know what really caught my eye? The smoked moose tongue ROFL – I would actually have loved to try some of that! And of course, the water spinach in fermented tofu sauce!

You look like you had a wonderful time and I’m really impressed by all the things Valerie accomplishes!

Btw, congratulations on being a Featured Publisher πŸ™‚

  16. 26 tigerfish July 7, 2010 at 1:03 am

Obviously, I don’t entertain a lot cos I don’t know what is a taste tripping party until now.

  17. 27 Jessie July 7, 2010 at 6:03 am

Man oh MANNNN!!! Why don’t I live in Edmonton, too?? Curses!! Valerie definitely threw a party to remember – what a great idea to have a potluck with a bunch of awesome food bloggers? This party looks like my idea of Heaven on Earth. Look at all those exquisite dishes!!!!!! I just had an enormous breakfast and I’m already drooling over my computer! I like how Valerie is standing next to the feast like a conductor – she certainly knows how to orchestrate fun events! πŸ˜€ I wish I cold have tried all the dishes, especially yours, LeQuan, because I luuuuurve fermented tofu. Hmm, I think I’ll have to make some fermented tofu sauce soon. Ok, you’ve convinced me πŸ™‚

BTW, you’ve never tried figs before?? Shame shame!! Fresh figs and prosciutto make a delicious combo, especially with goat cheese and a sweet balsamic vinegar. Mmmm. I usually get figs from my local grocery store, but I know that not all stores carry them. Do you have a “natural” foods store near you? I’ve actually heard of the miracle berry because a tropical plant greenhouse near us actually sells the plant! I was thinking about getting it for fun, and after reading about your cool experience, I think I might get one next time I’m there πŸ™‚

Have a great day, LeeeeeQs! πŸ˜€ xoxo

    • 28 luvtoeat July 7, 2010 at 5:40 pm

Hey Jessie! You should totally get the miracle plant! So cool that you’re even able to get one. I’d probably abuse it and use it on all sorts of meats. Teehee.

Oh, and I finally got to try a fig. No, not a slice, an actual whole fig. Guess what my next post will be about ;-). Hope you’re having a great week Jessie πŸ˜€

  18. 29 thehungryscholar July 7, 2010 at 12:25 pm

  19. 30 Tanantha @ I Just Love My Apron July 7, 2010 at 2:35 pm

How fun! there were so many food and peeps! great event and photos LeQuan. I know that vegetable you brought πŸ™‚ although I’m not sure what it’s called as someone told me it’s called morning glory or something. Now I learn it should be called water spinach!

I have never tried figs too! I’ve seen it but not sure how to eat haha

  20. 31 brittany July 7, 2010 at 4:31 pm

wow never heard of that….did you try the Applewood Smoked Moose Tongue? ahhh not to sure if i could do that!

  21. 33 sophia July 7, 2010 at 5:11 pm

  23. 35 Lawyer Loves Lunch July 8, 2010 at 6:42 am

This looks like the coolest party EVER! Every picture was better than the last. First, I was like, oooh figs. And then homemade flat bread. And then the pavlovas. If I was getting hungry reading this post, I imagine it was just wild in person πŸ™‚

  24. 36 Stella July 8, 2010 at 1:24 pm

Hey White Girl (smile)!!! I love rice too, and don’t feel I ever need bread like most people from the South here in the states. And they say people who prefer/eat rice over other starches are about 20% thinner than their bread & potato eating counterparts. That’s pretty good…
p.s. I’m a white girl, but, when I was in high school, all of my Asian friends called me pan face and would swear up and down that I was part Asian. I have red hair too, so it makes no sense at all really…?
By the way, thanks for always being so sweet and supportive, LeQuan. Stella

  25. 37 homecookedem July 8, 2010 at 1:52 pm

Hello!!! Thanks so much for stopping by my blog!! πŸ™‚ Love yours! This post alone has me in love with your blog already! What a fabulous spread!!!!!! I am a little piggy too so I would have been right there with you filling my plate to the brim and back for seconds and thirds. That’s a place you better be sure to wear your stretchy pants to, that’s for sure!! Yummmm!! πŸ™‚

  26. 38 Devaki July 9, 2010 at 7:04 pm

Dear Le Quan – I am SO SO jealous. Imagine Val and you in the same room and a parade of great food to boot!

Val in a Goddess of Hosting for sure. What a wonderful way to meet fellow local bloggers. The food is wonderful and the pavlovas had me drooling.

I am so glad you shared this with us.
